With strong attendance at this summer’s exhibition at the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence, the retrospective has been held over and expanded through January to include three additional galeries presenting some 20 new works never before shown.
The original exhibition displayed in its final room Verdier’s most recent creations after a two-year plein-air painting project around Mount Sainte Victoire. Now that oeuvre has been broadened to include preparatory drawings in which she settled on a minimalist vision of the famed mountain in order to express its geomorphological dimension. A second body of work shows how Verdier continues to work from memory, in particular following a stay at the Sainte Victoire Priory during her nomadic studio period in October 2018. Over several nights at the summit of Mount Sainte Victoire, the artist rose at 4am to observe the still mountain from the spectacular vantage point of the Brèche-des-Moines. Weeks afterward in her studio, Verdier would embark on a nocturnal series of monumental paintings treating the silence and the dialogue of that slumbering landscape, that space between internal light and the coming dawn.
