In painting what has interested me most for the last 35 years is harmony, a possible communion with the life spirit: Leaving behind figurative representation, the fixed immobility of things and the world, to seize vital forces, the essential dynamic – a kind of thought in movement.

I was very touched by the French Tennis Federation and Lelong & Co. Gallery who together invited me to create the poster for this year’s French Open tournament. Inviting contemporary artists to create posters over the past 37 years has proven visionary and the spirit of the poster over all those years has indeed marked our history: 1991 Joan Miro, 2000 Antoni Tàpies, 2001 Sean Scully and 2008 Arnulf Rainer, among many others.

The poster itself has a sacred unifying power. It forces us contemporary artists to move beyond our universe and dialogue with the world of sports, erasing boundaries and exchanging our experiences.

And in the amazing shock of those improbable encounters, we make many discoveries…

For the 2018 tournament, I aspired to paint the tennis court, in this case my wood stretcher, with its vibrations of red ochre clay court pigments, and the lightning speed of the movement of the tennis player hitting the ball. Painting the spontaneity of the gesture seized in its momentum, the force of hitting the ball that will then bounce on the court, was truly captivating to me.

I think that traces of this élan have a suggestive power over the public that I hope might become the symbol of this tournament. The bouncing ball, the velocity of that moment of the optimal tension of the player’s gesture, of suspended time, is pure vital energy, emotion and sensation.
