Soundscapes – The Juilliard Experiment presents 46 paintings and works on paper produced during and after Fabienne Verdier’s semester spent as The Juilliard School’s first visual artist-in-residence in 2014, an event the artist herself qualifies as a “leap of faith”. With the ambition to discover the concordance between painting and music during live experimentation with faculty and student solo instrumentalists and singers, Verdier’s improvised work in spontaneous pursuit of the essential universal rhythm proved to be a profoundly liberating experience, marking a significant shift for her in terms of brushstrokes, tools and methods of composition. Her focus on impermanence, movement and change invites the viewer in to experience an awareness of rhythm in all the structures of the universe.

Soundscapes – The Juilliard Experiment présente 46 peintures et travaux sur papier en lien avec la résidence de Fabienne Verdier à la Juilliard School de New York pendant un semestre de 2014 – un événement que l’artiste qualifie de déterminant. Grâce à diverses expérimentations avec les instrumentistes et chanteurs solistes de l’école, elle a cherché à découvrir une concomitance possible entre peinture et musique, entre ligne picturale et ligne sonore. Cette quête spontanée du rythme essentiel et universel à travers l’improvisation s’est avérée profondément libératrice pour elle, marquant un tournant en termes de touche, d’outils et de méthodes de composition. Ses recherches sur l’impermanence, le mouvement et la transformation invitent le regardeur à percevoir le rythme présent dans chaque structure de l’univers
